ABOUT THE USS
The United Scottish Society was formed in 1952 and since then has pursued the goal of keeping alive the Scottish heritage found throughout California and the country. The organization has fervently pursued the desire to stimulate interest and encourage people to keep alive the traditions and activities of the Scots.
The United Scottish Society hosts Highland Games in Orange County, sponsors entertainment direct from Scotland, hosts a Robert Burns Dinner, promotes Highland Dancing and other concerts, meetings and activities that are reflective of the Scottish Culture.
The USS has members
of both Scots and non-Scots heritage enjoying the benefits of memberships. The organization welcomes people of
all cultural backgrounds who are interested in the Scottish heritage and
want to see that heritage grow and thrive in the new world.
The USS is made up of volunteers who help to organize and run all USS
activities. If you would like to volunteer, please let the USS know! We
are always happy to have help in things such as the Highland Games, the
USS Mailout, and other activities such as the Picnic & Children's
Christmas Party.
The Los Angeles Highland Games were conducted for many years before the formality of incorporation was approved on January 15, 1952, when a charter as a non-profit organization was obtained by The United Scottish Society, Inc. of Southern California. The original articles were signed by Hugh M. Wilson, Thomas C. Calderwood and Angus Morrison.
The presentation of an annual Highland Games was the primary activity of the United Scottish Society, Inc. for many years. The range of activities has expanded significantly in recent years to encompass promotion of charter flights to Britain; sponsoring of concerts featuring entertainers direct from Scotland; and scheduling of social events through the activities of the Society.
The purposes of the organization, as stated in the Bylaws, are 'to stimulate interest and encourage proficiency in traditional Scottish activities, including Highland dancing, piping and drumming, athletic contests and related activities,' and 'to sponsor and promote competitions, concerts, games, gatherings and meetings at which activities reflective of Scottish culture and heritage will be displayed.' In addition, Scottish culture and heritage is promoted by providing publicity about important events and assisting deserving organizations through a program of charities and benevolences.
After lengthy negotiations, both the Franchise Tax Board and the Internal Revenue Service granted tax exempt status to the United Scottish Society, Inc. in 1977.
Events of interest, in addition to the annual Highland Gathering and Festival, include an annual Robert Burns dinner in January, a Senior Citizens' Luncheon in November, an Annual Picnic, and a variety of social events scheduled throughout the year.
The organization meets on the second Sunday of every month (except July, August and September) at the Masonic Lodge in
Downey, CA. Semi-annual meetings of the general membership are held in
May and November.
Members receive Bulletins six times annually that bring news of interest to the Scottish community in Southern California.
